Vera Gutkina
1953-2022
Vera Gutkina was born in Moscow and immigrated to Israel in 1982. She settled in Jerusalem where she lived until her untimely death in 2022. Gutkina hails from a family of scientists. Her father was a physicist, her mother an engineer, and her brother a mathematician. She was expected to follow in the family path and was sent to study Light engineering at the university, from which she holds an engineering Master degree. However, the pull of her desire to be an artist was uncompromising, and Gutkina went to study painting under the renowned artist Vladimir Shtranikh, a student of the great Russian painter Konstantin Korovin. The fusion between science and art is visible in her paintings that engage in different forms of experimentation with color and material. Space, time, and spirituality are the main topics she explores in her work.
In 1979 Gutkina became a member of the Moscow Union of Artists, and in 1983 a member of the Jerusalem Artists House. In 1988 Gutkina was awarded a fellowship by the Ministry of Education and Culture of Israel to be the Israeli Resident Artist at the Cité des Arts in Paris. Gutkina returned time and again to the Cité des Arts, an important site for her artistic creation. In 2013 she was awarded the Shoshana Ish-Shalom Art Award by the Jerusalem Artists House. Gutkina presented in a variety of solo and group exhibitions in Israel and around the world.
